South Caicos Ferry Services
Taking a public passenger ferry is one of the primary ways of getting to South Caicos from Providenciales. No regular ferries travel to South Caicos from any other island.
The alternative is a private boat transfer or a flight (which tends to be the most comfortable and efficient option).
Ferry service between Providenciales and South Caicos is currently only offered through Captain Russell’s Ferry. The scheduled route via Caribbean Cruisin', which also runs the TCI Ferry to North Caicos, is no longer running.
Travel time is between 1.5 and 3 hours, depending on ocean conditions. The cost is $80 one-way and $130 round-trip (2026 price).
The journey takes place entirely on the vibrant and shallow turquoise Caicos Banks.
Providenciales Ferry Dock
The ferry departs from Heaving Down Rock Marina (Walkin Marina).
Parking inside the marina starts at $5 per day. Personal vehicle and taxi drop-off is $1.
South Caicos Ferry Dock
On South Caicos, the ferry operates from the Cockburn Harbour area. The port is a short drive from Salterra Resort & Spa and the Ocean & Beach Resort.
Important Ferry Information
Ferries run less frequently to South Caicos than they do to North Caicos (the most popular ferry destination from Providenciales).
It’s strongly recommended that you book your ferry well in advance to ensure availability, especially if you have reserved accommodation on South Caicos. In case of bad weather, most ferry operators are accommodating and will rebook you for the next available day at no charge.
Ferry availability can also be limited when special events are happening, like Fisherman's Day or the Big South Regatta.
The passenger ferries in Turks and Caicos are smaller than some tourists are accustomed to and have limited cargo space. You may be charged for excess baggage. The typical allowance is one 50-pound (22.7 kg) bag and a personal carry-on item. While the ferries sometimes make exceptions for sporting equipment like fishing rods, scuba gear, and kiteboarding gear, it’s best to let the operator know ahead of time to avoid surprises.
While the water is often calm and the boats travel more quickly than drive-on ferries, the ride can be unpleasant in choppy conditions.
Private Boat Transfer
Both luxury South Caicos resorts can arrange private boat transfers for guests flying into Providenciales.
While vastly more expensive, private boat charters are a more comfortable and luxurious way of getting to the island. Some boats (like Axopars) can be faster than the ferry and offer a smoother ride on choppy days.
These vessels, typically high-end speed boats or power catamarans, can usually accommodate between 10 and 12 people. Prices start at $2,500 for a one-way transfer (2026 price).
Flying to South Caicos
Both domestic airlines, Caicos Express Airways and interCaribbean, provide regular service to South Caicos from the Providenciales International Airport (PLS) (where nearly all international flights to the country land). Flight time is approximately 20 minutes and round-trip service starts at around $180.
The South Caicos Airport (XSC) also welcomes a twice-weekly direct flight from Miami through American Airlines. This flight is the most convenient option for many travelers arriving from the United States, but pauses during the low-tourism season months of September and October.
Should I Take the Ferry or Fly?
Most domestic flights in the Turks and Caicos are on small turboprop planes with as few as six seats. If you’re scared of traveling on small airplanes, you may prefer the ferry or a private boat transfer.
If you’re traveling with no-fly items (items prohibited for air travel), you'll need to take the ferry or a private boat. Boats are more convenient if you're traveling with ample luggage or large bags, such as large kiteboarding bags. As the domestic planes are small, carriers cannot always accommodate large or excess luggage.
