Providenciales Grace Bay Boat Tours

Consistently ranked one of the world’s best beaches, Grace Bay is an amazing place to spend the day, both on the coast and out in its crystal-clear turquoise waters. Many boat charters and island-hopping cruises either launch from Grace Bay or spend time in its waters before visiting the nearby cays and snorkeling sites.

Group half-day tours are the most popular excursions, as they typically combine coral reef snorkeling, a stop at one or more uninhabited cays, and cruising time at sea with drinks, snacks, and gear. You can usually find one of these cruises running any day of the week, weather-permitting. They also tend to be the best for families, as there’s an activity for everyone to enjoy.

Grace Bay boat tours pick up either directly from the beach or depart from one of the main marinas on Providenciales.

Grace Bay Snorkeling Tours

While there isn’t any noteworthy snorkeling directly off Grace Bay Beach, amazing snorkeling can be found at the Turks and Caicos barrier reef approximately a mile offshore. This reef is part of a massive network of corals that stretches along the northern boundary of the archipelago (collectively, about 340 miles or 547 kilometers) and is one of the finest reef systems in the tropical Atlantic Ocean.

Snorkeling tours in Grace Bay allow you to explore a beautiful portion of this extensive coral reef. Most visit Leeward Reef or the coral heads found off Pine Cay. These snorkeling reefs are relatively shallow at between 15 and 25 feet deep (5 to 8 m) and harbor a variety of sea life, including sea turtles, colorful parrotfish, stingrays, eels, spiny lobsters, and Caribbean reef sharks and nurse sharks. Guides usually brief you on what to expect at the site.

Refreshments (including soft drinks, rum punch, and light beer), snacks, and snorkel gear are typically included on half-day tours. Full-day tours usually provide a lunch of catered sandwiches and wraps or fresh BBQ.

Keep in mind that many companies limit or do not serve alcoholic beverages before the snorkeling portion of the cruise.

Half-Day and Full-Day Cruises

These trips allow you to experience a variety of sites in the beautiful Princess Alexandra National Park, a protected area encompassing numerous islands and a pristine swath of ocean off Providenciales. Group half-day and full-day cruises include snorkeling and time spent in the Caicos Cays, which is a chain of small idyllic islands (most of which are uninhabited) with world-class beaches. The standard half-day tour is 4 hours long and can be done during the morning or the afternoon.

Little Water Cay and Half Moon Bay is the most popular stop for group tours, thanks to their pristine white-sand beaches and friendly population of Turks and Caicos Islands Rock Iguanas. Adventures to these adjacent attractions are often marketed as Iguana Island tours, where you can see the endangered and endemic reptile in its natural habitat and relax in the crystal-clear water offshore.

There’s also Water Cay, Dellis Cay, and Fort George Cay, the latter of which used to be a military fort. A short distance off this cay, you can snorkel around sunken cannons that date back to the 1800s.

Right off Fort George Cay and nearby Pine Cay (home to one of the best beaches in Turks and Caicos) are ever-shifting ocean sandbars that feel like your own private beach.

While there’s plenty to see, group half-day tours typically only stop at one of these cays and beaches, as they also include snorkeling at a coral reef and cruising time at sea. Full-day group tours and private charters are a better way to see more of what the Caicos Cays has to offer.

If you’d rather not snorkel or get wet, TCI Coastal Tours offers dry boat-based sightseeing cruises that visit many of the same attractions.

Grace Bay Sailing Charters

Sailing is a romantic and laid-back way to explore the bay. In Turks and Caicos, you have the option of booking a tour on a traditional sailboat (such as a schooner) or a cruising catamaran. Traditional sailboats typically pick up from one of the marinas, whereas the larger power catamarans often pickup right from the beach.

These tours are a nice option for intergenerational families, as they're entertaining for both children and for older travelers who aren't looking for a party cruise. Once they've reached the best cruising waters, these boats will cut the engines and hoist the sails, serve refreshments, and casually coast past the resorts, villas, and beaches of the north coast of Providenciales.

Several companies offer shared half-day, full-day, and sunset excursions.

Private Boat Charters

Private boat charters give you more flexibility than the typical shared tour. For example, you can decide to spend longer snorkeling at the barrier reef, or travel further to reefs less explored. You can pick the attractions you want to visit, add on activities and water sports that aren’t usually offered on public boat tours (like jet skis, wakesurfing, and subwinging), and adventure to as many beaches and cays as you like.

You can also discover some of the attractions on the east and southern coasts of Providenciales, like the La Famille Express Shipwreck, Captain Oak’s floating bar, and Noah's Ark.

Sailboats, power catamarans, and larger speed boats with cabins are popular charter vessels. Axopar day yachts are great for island-hopping because their shallow draft allows them to cruise right up to the beach. Larger luxury boat charters usually travel with a tender that makes it easy to explore shallow areas.

Grace Bay Sunset Cruises

Grace Bay is the crown jewel of the Turks and Caicos, and it’s particularly magical when the sun starts to set. There are a few different types of vessels that offer this experience, though sailboats and luxury catamarans are the most relaxing and romantic.

Sunset sails typically depart about an hour before sunset, starting from Grace Bay or Leeward and sailing up the coast past Mangrove Cay, Little Water Cay (Iguana Island), Half Moon Bay, and Water Cay. There are no beach stops and no snorkeling involved on public trips, which take place entirely on the boat.

Public Grace Bay sunset cruises are 2–3 hours long, and most include some food (either light snacks, local seafood, or catered hors d’oeuvres) as well as beer, rum punch, wine, and occasionally champagne.

Be sure to look out for dolphins and rays in the water, glistening stars and planets once the sun sets, and marine glowworms around the full moon.

Tour Prices

Price varies by company, but it typically costs around $150 per person for a group half-day tour, $250 per person for a full-day tour, and $120 per person for a sunset cruise (2026 prices). Most companies offer a discount of 50% for children between 2 and 12 and don't charge for infants.

Private charters start at around $1,000 for four hours.

All tour companies must charge 12% Government Tourism Tax. This may or may not be included in the initial price. Tips of around 10–15% are common and expected in Turks and Caicos for good service.

Bookings and Reservations

Most group boat tours can be booked with relatively short notice. These trips take place on larger vessels with more capacity and run several days a week.

Private boat charters require more notice to book, as there’s more planning involved for the captain and crew. Some add-on activities need to be reserved in advance.

Most companies require a deposit to secure your booking.

When to Go

The high season in Turks and Caicos is from December to April. If you’re planning your vacation for this time, book early to ensure availability.

Water temperature is slightly cooler during these months, but still very pleasant for swimming. May to July is when the ocean conditions off Providenciales are usually calmest.

While it does bring the risk of poorer weather, visiting during September and October is a great way to save money on your tour, as many companies offer discounts during this time. These months fall within the Atlantic hurricane season.

What to Bring

Bring a towel, sunscreen, and sun-protective clothing (such as a hat and sun shirt). The sun can be intense, and some boats don’t offer much shade.

If you can, use a reef-safe sunscreen. These sunscreens are typically made from zinc oxide or titanium dioxide and are less likely to harm the country’s fragile corals.

You’re welcome to bring your own snorkeling equipment. Don’t forget a camera to capture the amazing reefs, turquoise water, ocean sandbars, and wildlife you’ll see on your excursion.

Safety

Catching a tour boat from Grace Bay Beach in most cases involves wading into knee-deep water and climbing a ladder at the front of the boat. If you have mobility issues, consider requesting pickup from a dock location or a marina.

Snorkeling tours take place in the open ocean at sites that are not within easy swimming distance from shore. Do not snorkel if you do not know how to swim.

Conditions and Weather

Grace Bay is fairly sheltered, and as such, the water here is often quite calm. This makes it a great destination for boat tours and a variety of water sports, from tubing to parasailing and e-foiling.

Sunny and calm days are the norm in the islands, and poor weather rarely lasts. However, in the case of bad weather—particularly when large waves can make a boat tour unpleasant—most companies will reschedule or refund your trip at no cost.
