What to Do on Grand Turk

Grand Turk has some of the best diving and historic attractions in the country.

4x4 Safari
Chukka Tours in collaboration with the cruise center offers guided rides in converted Ford F250 pickup trucks around Grand Turk. This attraction is not so much an off-road safari as it is an open vehicle tour of the main sights on the island.

Cruise Center Boat Trips
  Cruise guests only
The cruise center also offers several different boat trips and cruises to the surrounding scenic beaches and small cays, and for snorkeling and fishing. These excursions can get crowded at times.

Diving
Grand Turk offers some truly exceptional diving. What sets Grand Turk apart from other destinations is the exceptional coral walls. In places, it drops from thirty feet down to depths of more than seven thousand feet, usually only a few hundred feet from the beach. Many of the ship wrecks around Grand Turk are also popular dive sites.

Dune Buggy Tours

The dune buggy tour is a guided excursion in tubular frame vehicles to the main sights on Grand Turk. Each dune buggy can carry two people. There’s not really any off-road driving on this tour, but it’s a unique way to see the island. Drivers must be a minimum of 18 years old, and have a valid driver’s license. It may be more cost effective and fun to rent a scooter and explore on your own.

Fishing
Excellent sport fishing, bottom reef fishing and bone fishing can all be found within a day’s trip of Grand Turk. The fishing packages sold by the cruise lines tend to be crowded reef fishing trips, so you may be better off with a custom arrangement if you’re an enthusiast.

Grand Turk Historical Lighthouse
 $7   Northeast Point
Built in 1852, the lighthouse is Grand Turk’s most famous landmark and is the only lighthouse in the country. The main structure was prefabricated in England and was originally set up to burn whale oil for light. It was eventually converted to kerosene, and finally, electricity in 1971. The lighthouse is no longer operational, although the grounds are open to the public. Guided tours are offered when a cruise ship is in.

Horseback Riding
Chukka tours offers a guided horseback tour on the northeast end of Grand Turk, which includes a ride in the ocean.

National Museum
The Turks and Caicos National Museum on Front Street houses many fascinating displays. Notable amongst its exhibits are thousand year-old Lucayan artifacts and the extensive Molasses Reef Wreck collection, where remains from the oldest European shipwreck excavated in the Western Hemisphere can be seen.

Old Grand Turk Prison
This small complex is a good example of the classic colonial Bermudian architecture of the traditional Turks and Caicos. Several exhibits on crime and punishment in the Turks and Caicos Islands are housed here. Open only when a cruise ship is in port.

Snorkeling
Although Grand Turk has some of the best diving in the world, the excellent reefs tend to be a bit too far from the shore and just out of depth to really be great for snorkeling. The west and northwest sides of the island probably offer the best locations for snorkeling from the beach. Several of the dive and tour operators offer short boats trips to better snorkeling areas off shore and near Gibbs Cay.

Snuba
  Cruise guests only
SNUBA is a relatively new way to and simple way to experience the reefs and aquatic life of Grand Turk. The system is a cross between snorkeling and scuba diving and can be enjoyed easily by inexperienced divers after the brief introduction. SNUBA works by connecting the diver by air-line to tanks on the surface. All the heavy gear floats on a small raft on the surface, allowing you to move about and explore down to about 20 feet.

Spa
Spa Anani provides a full range of spa services. Treatments are offered at their main spa location on Dukes Street, at the cruise center, or your hotel room. If you’re arriving by cruise ship, be sure to book in advance.

Waterloo Golf Course
Built on the grounds of the governor’s residence by a former governor, this small 9-hole, par 54 course is open to the public. Space is limited, so come early.
